I can't believe that I have not written since September 12! What a month this has been. Ike kicked our butts and we are only now back on our feet. Here's a brief run down of the events of Ike and the days after....
The night of the storm we moved Chloe into our room in her pack n play. The only tree in our yard is in front of her room and we were concerned it would go through her window. Marc and I woke to the strongest wind we had ever heard. Our house literally felt like it was a tent. We would hear pops and see flashes and know that another transformer was blown outside. Our power went out around 3 am and we sat around the radio listening to updates. The next morning was crazy with debris and limps and trees all over.
The second night was the RAIN! I have never seen so much rain! We saw it coming up our drive and into our yard and in the middle of the night Marc was outside cleaning out the drains so the water could drain and I was stacking things on our couches and beds because I thought we were going to have water in the house! Luckily we did not!
Day three the heat and humidity and boredom set in. Marc had cleaned up the yard and helped the neighbors and there was nothing left to do except wait for the power to come back on. We were so blessed and thankful not to have damage to our house but Chloe was having a terrible time with the heat and we knew we needed to head out.
Our friends Selma and Evout asked us to head to Marble Falls and stay in a nearby hotel and join them at the lake house they were renting during the day. We spent three days relaxing, taking walks, cooking and hanging out. The next two nights we spent in Austin at our dear friend Paige's house. She actually moved out so we could take over! We got to see Jenn, Adi, Arthur, and spent time at Barton Springs. Chloe went on her first train ride and we ate good food and went on lots of walks.
The highlight was seeing sweet Laura Boone and her brand new little baby, Sawyer. We visited them in the hospital on his second day on earth! What a wonderful treat for us. She is rock star mommy and makes having three kiddos under five easy as pie. How do you do it, Laura?!
All good things have to come to and end and after being gone for almost a week, we headed back to Houston. We still had no power so we moved down to the west side with the "rents." It was wonderful to be with Vicky and Bob for a week. Chloe loved all the attention and they babysat and gave Marc and I a much needed break when we needed it.
On day 19, we were sitting in our house while checking on our poor cats and at long last the lights came back on! We ran outside and did a "let there be light" dance. We were so happy and ready for our lives to regain some sense of normalcy. We went back to Grandma and Grandpa's for one more night to pack up. Monday my mom followed me home and helped me get the house back in order.
I feel like September is gone and there is nothing to show for it. Although we were very inconvenienced for a long time, Marc often reminded me that "at least we have a home to go back to" and a lot of people do not. Thank you Lord for protecting us and blessing us with so many people that took us in and helped us out! No more hurricanes, please.
